Celebrating women leaders in politics, business, science and the arts

“Women hold up half the sky.”
— ancient Chinese proverb

Women at the Top

Aung San Suu Kyi. Lady Gaga. Hilary Clinton. Wangari Maathai. Emily Abrera. In case you haven’t noticed, women have become a more powerful force in the world today. More than merely influencing business, politics, science and entertainment, they’re taking the lead in their respective industries and changing the world.

In celebration of women leaders, and to facilitate a grand exchange of ideas among women in Asia, Singapore-based marketing specialist company Arc Media Global is holding the “Women at the Top 2012” conference on February 23-24, 2012 30-31 August 2012. Speakers at the event include top beauty and wellness magnate Dr. Vicki Belo (whose company the Belo Medical Group published two papers in two international journals, and received the Reader’s Digest award for being one of the most trusted brands in 2010), and Former First Lady and 2nd District Ilocos Norte Representative Imelda Romualdez-Marcos who will give the closing keynote speech on “Millennium Development Goals in the Philippines,” which was borne out of the United Nations’ Millennium Summit in September 2000.

The keynote address will be given by none other than Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor, the spouse of Malaysia’s prime minister, president of the Welfare Association of Minister’s Wives (BAKTI), and Patron of various Malaysian foundations such as Children in Hope Foundation, Malaysian Nature Society, Malaysia Aids Council, National Heart Institute Foundation, Malaysian Medical Welfare Fund, and Foundation for the Development of Underprivileged Children. Rosmah Mansor has been a passionate champion for women empowerment, gender equality and uplifting the economic status of women, and as such, is now a sought-after speaker in high-profile conferences around the world.

Other notable leaders who will share their ideas at the conference are Regina Paz Lopez (managing director of the ABS-CBN Foundation), Marga Deona (digital marketing and strategy consultant at Microsoft), and Rina Shah (Washington D.C.-based political communications strategist). The conference chairperson will be award-winning writer Prof. Jeena Rani Marquez-Manaois.

Women at the Top 2012 will be held just days before March, which is Women’s Month. I love Women’s Month! Local women’s groups such as the Democratic Socialist Women of the Philippines and Gabriela hold great awareness activities in March. The Women at the Top 2012 conference will be a great kick-off event for this year’s celebrations, as it brings together women from a wide range of sectors in society. It will be interesting to see how each conference participant will bring her cultural background and experiences in the discussions about economics, the environment, poverty, science, the arts and gender equality. Especially since the focus will be on Asia, which, while having greatly diverse cultures steeped in ancient traditions, is arguably the most economically booming region in the world today.

As a matter of fact, business will play a major part of the discussion. “The earning power of women globally is expected to reach $18 trillion by 2014. That’s more than the estimated GDPs of India and China combined. Women at the Top 2012 will uncover insights into cashing in on the expanding potential of the female purse in Asia! On top of that, Filipino women are active online shoppers: Over 50% of registered users on eBay Philippines are women, with lifestyle as the category of choice,” says Consumer Insights Director Frank Mercado. “To add, women across the globe are the number 1 consumers. 25% of Indonesia women work, and they are increasingly “taking more of a role in running big businesses. On the other hand, 9 in 10 Malaysian females cited quality as the top driver for brand loyalty, the highest percentage recorded among all 21 markets surveyed with France close behind at 87%.”

Choosing Manila as the venue for Women at the Top 2012 was not just a matter of convenience, but of relevance. “We chose Manila because of its massive marketing landscape for women. With brands emerging from different parts of the country, undoubtedly, Manila is the next ‘it’ city,” says 2008 Philippine Star Supreme Activisionary and Women Leaders promoter Katrina Paola Lugartos.

So here’s to women and their continuing efforts in changing the global landscape, and to a productive Women’s Month in March!

“Women at the Top 2012” has been moved to 30-31 August 2012. Details to be released soon.
