So most (rational) people are in an uproar over Pope Benedict’s statement that condoms exacerbate the problem of AIDS. The Vatican doesn’t seem at all bothered about this, which is not entirely unexpected, given its history of not apologizing for the stupid things the Church has done throughout the ages.
But what can we do about it? Well, some people thought that they ought to protest this statement by sending condoms to the pope. Yes, that’s right. They claim that hundreds of thousands of condoms have already been sent, and Facebook groups have been formed to help spread the idea across the Internet.
You don’t have to be subscribed to Facebook. All you need is a condom or a picture of one, an envelope, stamps and the pope’s address:
Prefettura della Casa Pontificia
00120 Città del Vaticano
Of course, some people have observed that the hundreds of thousands of condoms will be put to better use if they’re given to AIDS-stricken poor countries like those in Africa, but if it makes you feel better, you can always go donate to an AIDS charity. Or just send an expired condom, which is going to get thrown out anyway. I think this symbolic gesture will be worth a million condoms ultimately ending up in a landfill if it gets our point across (sorry, environmentalists, but we godless heathens care about Catholics dying from AIDS too).
